It is with heavy heart that I write with such sad news of the death of our esteemed Fellow, Eve Coles. Eve had been in hospital over the past weeks and was feeling poorly. Sadly, she suffered a cardiac arrest and died peacefully in the early hours of Saturday, 8 May 2021. Eve was a much loved and loving wife to Jim, a much adored mum and grandma and such a friend to many.
To all of us in the profession, she was well known for her passion about all things emergency management and making a difference. Many of us were her students, and she was immensely proud that she taught so many of us” we were one of hers’” and that we were a testament to the great and respected academic that she was! She was a highly respected for her research, teaching and presenting. She contributed so much and always made sure the the voice of the profession was heard; she made us listen.Up until a few weeks ago, Eve had continued to work on the review of, and delivery of the updated Competence Framework. She was working through all of the feedback from the recent focus groups and was delighted that the draft document had been so well received. Ever the trooper, she was eager to have it completed. We will honour Eve’s memory by concluding the work.
We intend to deliver a tribute to her. There is so much to say, she achieved so much – not just within the UK but also on the global stage. We also want to consider a lasting legacy that will be remembered for generations to come. We will be her voice.
For now, our thoughts and love are with Jim and her family, as they come to terms with their immense loss.
To our beloved Eve, you will be in our hearts forever.
